Encarnacion Pyle, an award-winning reporter and editor with extensive experience producing high-impact investigative journalism, has been named the next executive editor of the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
Pyle is currently managing editor of The Columbus Dispatch in Ohio, where she leads the daily operation of the newsroom. She also supervises the investigation and accountability team.

“I want to continue the great work that the newsroom is already doing and continue to be a service to the community,” Pyle said. “I have a soft spot for good enterprise reporting. I would love to see continued accountability and investigative reporting.”
Pyle, 56, was introduced to the newsroom Tuesday by outgoing Executive Editor Chris Coates, who joined The Times-Dispatch in March 2022. He was promoted to senior director-local news for parent company Lee Enterprises last year.

Pyle has been a reporter and editor for more than three decades. She has a bachelor’s degree in communication studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and a master’s degree in broadcast journalism from the University of Maryland College Park. She also was a reporter for the Santa Barbara News-Press, Ventura County Star and Oxnard Press-Courier in California.
At The Dispatch, she previously served as an assistant metro editor after working 19 years as a reporter covering such topics as immigration, aging, higher education and social services.

Pyle will also serve as Virginia editor for Lee. Other properties in the group include The Roanoke Times, The Daily Progress in Charlottesville, The Free Lance-Star in Fredericksburg and The News & Advance in Lynchburg, among others.
Pyle starts in Richmond in February.
