Goochland senior Bill Belcher competes in the 200 freestyle event at Goochland YMCA. Belcher recently earned a region title in the 200-yard individual medley event on Feb. 10.
Looking to defend its boys region title from last season, Goochland’s swim team traveled to SwimRVA for the Class 3, Region B Swim Championships on Feb. 10, finding itself with four individual swimmers who claimed gold on the championship stage.
The boys team of the Bulldogs placed second this time around, with Bill Belcher, Charlie Harrington and Connor Davis all capturing gold medals, while the girls team finished in fourth, led by a first place finish in the 50-yard freestyle event from junior Olivia Spooner.
Belcher, who previously won the 500-yard freestyle in last year’s region finals, claimed gold in the 200 individual medley, while Harrington won the 100 breaststroke and Davis the 100 backstroke.
Those core three swimmers also had top-3 finishes in other events that’ll send them off to compete at the Class 3 State Championships, with Belcher placing second in the 500 freestyle event that he won a region championship in a year ago, Harrington earning second in the 100 butterfly and Davis turning in a third-place showing in the 50 freestyle.
Freshmen Alex Horst and Ford Reams also made strong impressions in their young high school swimming careers, handing in third place finishes for the Bulldogs. Horst accomplished his third place swim in the 200 individual medley while Reams earned his in the 200 freestyle.
On the girls side, Spooner earned both a gold and a silver individually, also placing second in the 100 freestyle, while senior Annika Rogerson placed second in the 200 individual medley and fifth in the 100 butterfly. Alexandra Reid also turned in another top-5 performance, placing fourth in the 100 breaststroke.
The Bulldogs that punched tickets to the Class 3 state championships will continue on with their season for one more meet that could provide their team with a chance at state title glory. They’ll travel to the Christiansburg Aquatic Center on Feb. 21 for the championship meet.
