Markel, a winner in last year’s Top Workplaces, told The Times-Dispatch that its efforts focused on retaining employees by listening to their requests for flexible work-from-home schedules, matching dollars and time off for volunteering plus internal social groups to connect people.
The insurance company also said it was important to explain how their office is a place that would-be workers would be fulfilled.
“It’s an exciting business to be in. We view insurance as keeping that global economy running and allowing people to do their business and take the risks that they need to take,” said Sue Davies, chief human resources officer for Markel.
CarMax, another winner in 2023 for its 10th year in a row, told The Times-Dispatch that it increased team communication and diversity efforts to help employees have more of a feeling of belonging.
“I love coming to work every day knowing that my opinions matter and that I’m respected, not just in words, but also in actions,” said Kerri Jenkins, a senior consultant for CarMax auction services. “The fact that I can feel comfortable walking up to anyone, including executives, and know I am listened to, is something that makes me happy to come back every day.”
This year marks the Richmond Times-Dispatch’s 11th annual Top Workplaces awards program, where companies big and small can be nominated for recognition of their organizational health.
