Powhatan’s celebrity swan reported safe
For those concerned about Julliette, the white swan that has recently been seen in a pond on the eastbound side of Route 60 and has become something of a local celebrity, her owner has reported that she is alive and well. Some residents took to Facebook last week to inquire about a bird that had apparently been struck and killed by a vehicle, distraught at the thought that the deceased bird was Juliette.
Ashley Welch posted on Facebook last week that the swan was fine and that the bird on the roadside was an unfortunate goose.
Welch, who owns the wedding venue Lakeside at Welch Estate, said the property’s expansive lake has been home to both Juliette and her mate Romeo.
Several weeks ago however, Welch explained, a lovers’ quarrel necessitated Julliette’s temporary move to the front pond.

“Her mate is currently running her off and the front pond is safest for her right now until the weather clears from predators,” Welch said. “She is the absolute sweetest and loves her heads of lettuce and cracked corn treats which she receives daily. Hopefully with warmer days we will get her safely moved back into the larger lake.”
